I am Mishael Laishah L. Budomo. But you can call me 'Mish'. I was born in Singapore on March 7, 1996. We moved to the Philippines when I was 18 years old. It was heartbreaking. I had to leave all my close friends behind. I was so used to the culture, the food, traveling and just being in Singapore. Here's my story.
As I mentioned, I was born and raised in Singapore. I was basically Singaporean. I hardly knew any Filipino words. English is my first language. Mandarin was my second. Followed by French and basic Malay. Being in Singapore, you learn the basics of other languages. (Which I enjoyed) I started working part-time in the fast-food industry when I was only 15 years old. I did it to help my parents out financially. Being only permanent residents, renting in Singapore was expensive. So from a young age, I stopped accepting allowance money from my parents. It felt good. I felt responsible and fulfilled.
After I graduated high school, I took a year break to really think about what I wanted to study in college. In that 1 year, I continued working and I also took up French. After that, I decided to take up Mass Communications. After completing my foundation studies for my course, we received the bad news - that we only had 2 months left in Singapore. Why?
Well, we are Filipino. I was a permanent resident and so was my mother and brother. My father hadn't applied for permanent residency at that time. Unfortunately, that was when the government decided that there should be a certain ratio of local to foreign employees and my father was affected. Despite his company reasoning (multiple times) on why he should be allowed to stay, the government stuck to their decision.
October 7, 2014 came. We had officially moved to the Philippines. For good. I decided to start working as I knew my proficiency in English would help me get a job in a call center. - It did! My past experiences include me working with Dish Network, Verizon, ClearCaptions and a few more clients.
Of course, the money we had saved up in Singapore could only last so long and I eventually became the breadwinner of the family. I started contributing most of my salary to my family when I was 20 years old and then fully supporting them when I was 22 years old. I admit it was tough. Especially since we were a family of 4. I worked so hard. I worked extra hours and really did my best to meet all our KPIs so that I would be eligible for incentives. In 2019, I met someone. We almost immediately got really close. We were practically best friends. We would tell each other secrets. We would turn to each other when we had problems. Little did I know he would be the man I would marry. He proposed in January 2020 and we got married in October that same year.
Despite being married, I was still supporting my family, which was tough. I wasn't able to save for myself or for my new family. Unfortunately, the account I was working for was able to come up with an AI that could do our jobs for us, which of course would allow them to generate more revenue. I had a little online thrift shop that could only help so much. I know that all the experience I have will be useful in jobs like Virtual Assistance and Social Media Management. I have also become a Customer Service expert.
I decided to take up a Freelancing Virtual Assistant course under the FVA Academy or Filipino Virtual Assistance Academy. This is really helping me polish my skills and at the same time I am learning how to do tasks of a Virtual Assistant. So with my experience, my skills and the new skills I am learning, I know I will be able to help businesses stand out, attract the right audience and thrive.
